The product core is now Performance First × Re-Form Style (09/16)
It started with a conversation: Ana Andjelic asks where the big brands have taken their attention away. We put that question to Breaking and found that no professional sports brand is building for it. This is how the core changed, why Re-Form is no longer all-caps, what changed across three locales today, and what is still unfinished and unproven.
Today we changed the product design core of BR3AK.
It did not start as an internal discussion. It started with a conversation we read — the brand advisor Ana Andjelic on the new rules of brand marketing. She asks one question, we put it to Breaking, and found something.
The question Ana Andjelic asks
Ana Andjelic is a long-standing brand advisor to Starbucks, and was global chief brand officer at Banana Republic and at Rebecca Minkoff. The question at the centre of her thinking is this:
Where have the big brands taken their attention away?
Her example is On Running. On Running knew it could never meet Nike or Adidas head-on at scale. But it noticed that Nike had moved its attention off pure runners — Nike had opened too many other categories, going into lifestyle, golf, swimming.
So On Running focused with extreme precision on long-distance runners and did nothing but product innovation in that one lane. In her words: they changed the culture of long-distance running.
Not culture first. Product first, made so good that those people could not do without it — and the culture followed.
(The full Traditional Chinese translation of that conversation is on aibrand.tw.)
We put that question to Breaking
The answer is not ambiguous:
No professional sports brand is building for Breaking.
The biggest force pushing the sport right now is Red Bull. It has built the competitions, the prize money, the media, the stage — but Red Bull is an energy drink brand, not an apparel brand. It can give the sport a stage. It cannot give an athlete the garment.
So what do breakers actually wear? A pile-up of hip-hop brands, none of them engineered for this sport.
Tuck the top in before stepping up, stop mid-session to pull it back down, deal with the worn-through patches yourself. All of that gets treated as normal, instead of as a problem nobody has solved.
This is not quite the situation On Running faced. Nike was distracted. Red Bull is not — Red Bull does Breaking better than anyone. It is simply not in the apparel business.
So this is not a competitor easing off. It is that the technical record for this category is blank: nobody has defined what Breaking apparel has to pass.
So the core changed
The product design core of BR3AK used to be one thing: RE-FORM — a garment does not need one fixed form, and can change to suit the movement, the occasion, the environment, the style and the wearer.
That definition is not wrong, and nothing about it was thrown out today.
But if the vacuum is that nobody is engineering for performance, then performance has to come first in the core. RE-FORM speaks about form. It does not speak about order.
So the core is now two things, in order:
Performance First × Re-Form Style
The weight is on First. It states an order, not a degree.
Not "we care a lot about performance" — every brand says that. It says: performance comes first, and it has to actually improve how you move, not just look like performance wear.
Style is not demoted
In Breaking, Style is the highest credit you can be given. Every breaker builds one out of music, movement and imagination. A Breaking brand whose design core has no Style in it is missing the thing this culture cares about most.
So the core is a formula, not a word:
Performance First × Re-Form Style — performance comes first, and style grows out of it.
Each half answers one end of the brand. Performance First faces outward: is this a sport that deserves to be taken seriously? Re-Form Style faces inward: who gets to wear it, and as whom?
Why Re-Form is no longer all-caps
This changed today too, and the reason has nothing to do with typography.
RE-FORM was all-caps because it used to be the only core. It is now one half of a formula. The weight of all-caps is no longer right, and set next to Performance First — which is Title Case — the line is inconsistent with itself.
So it is Re-Form everywhere now.
But the hyphen stays. That was recorded on 5 September: three places on the site apply text-transform: uppercase, and without the hyphen ReForm renders as REFORM — which reads as reform, correcting a fault, rather than re + form. With the hyphen it survives uppercasing as RE-FORM, and the reading holds.
What actually changed today
| What | Scope | Where it lands |
|---|---|---|
The FUNCTIONAL GRACE section on /about | zh-Hant / en / ja | Sub-head goes from RE-FORM to Performance First × Re-Form Style, plus the order rule and the Style passage |
| The three lines | zh-Hant / en / ja | RE-FORM THE FIT. → Re-Form the Fit. (and THE FUNCTION, YOUR STYLE) |
The brand description in brand.config.ts | zh-Hant / en / ja | Feeds the JSON-LD description and slogan, /api/brand.json, and the home page meta description |
That last one is easy to miss. The brand description is the paragraph crawlers and AI read. Change the About page without changing it and machines still see the old positioning.
What is still inconsistent
One, the home page Void03 copy is unchanged. It still carries BUILT TO RE-FORM. in display type, and a line reading BREAKING × RE-FORM × PERFORMANCE. That second one is a different formula, and it puts PERFORMANCE last — the opposite of the order set today.
It was left alone because those are display-type statements on the home page, and changing them shifts how the whole page is weighted. That is a design decision, not a copy decision. But it is inconsistent with the core right now.
Two, /about has its own meta description and does not use the brand description. It is not wrong, it just does not carry the new core.
The core has not been proven by a product yet
This part needs to be said plainly.
Performance First is a claim that gets checked on the spot. People in this scene test clothing with their bodies every day. Whether a garment holds up is settled in one session.
And the current state of BR3AK is: no confirmed factory, no verified materials.
So what was set today is a promise, not a fact that has been delivered. Until one thing is built to the point where it can be checked, Performance First is three words on a website.
The next step is not to solve every failure point at once. It is to pick the one that hurts most and get it to where someone feels it the first time they wear it. Until that exists, this core is still missing its evidence.
